My big brother Howard is campaigning for Proposition 8 in California.
The proposition 8 is rather interesting. On the surface it looks like hate laws designed to take away the rights of homosexuals. However it seems to be designed to protect the rights of millions of family members all over the country. How so? What happens in California usually spreads across the country in time. This video clip illustrates what is already happening in Main because of the gay marriage laws there. I was surprised and very interested in the clip show. If you are wondering how Porp 8 can affect you and your family, please watch this. I know that by posting this I will make myself and my blog pretty unpopular but that wasn't want I created it for. I think our children have rights too and that as families we have rights to teach them what we believe.
Here are a few more things that I have found about Prop 8.
1. Children in public schools will have to be taught that same-sex marriage is just as good as traditional marriage.
The California Education Code already requires that health education classes instruct children about marriage. (§51890)
Therefore, unless Proposition 8 passes, children will be taught that marriage between any two adults is of the same worth, regardless of gender. There will be serious clashes between the secular school system and the right of parents to teach their children their own values and beliefs.
2. Churches may be sued over their tax exempt status if they refuse to allow same-sex marriage ceremonies in their religious buildings open to the public. Ask whether your pastor, priest, minister, bishop, or rabbi is ready to perform such marriages in your chapels and sanctuaries.
3. Religious adoption agencies will be challenged by government agencies to give up their long-held right to place children only in homes with both a mother and a father. Catholic Charities in Boston already had to stop providing adoption services in Massachusetts because courts legalized same-sex marriage there.
4. Religions that sponsor private schools with married student housing may be required to provide housing for same-sex couples, even if counter to church doctrine, or risk lawsuits over tax exemptions and related benefits.
5. Ministers who preach against same-sex marriages may be sued for hate speech and risk government fines. It already happened in Canada, a country that legalized gay marriage. A recent California court held that municipal employees may not say: "traditional marriage," or "family values" because, after the same-sex marriage case, it is "hate speech."
6. It will cost you money. This change in the definition of marriage will bring a cascade of lawsuits, including some already lost (e.g., photographers cannot now refuse to photograph gay marriages; doctors cannot now refuse to perform artificial insemination of gays even given other willing doctors). Even if courts eventually find in favor of a defender of traditional marriage (highly improbable given today's activist judges), think of the money – your money – that will be spent on such legal battles.
YES on PROPOSITION 8
will define the word "marriage" by adding 14 words to the California State Constitution:
"Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California."
NO on PROPOSITION 8
will mean the State has no definition for the word "marriage" and will leave the term open to interpretation.

I respect parents' rights to choose what they feel is best for their children.
I feel, however, it is unreasonable to expect a secular public school system to not teach understanding and acceptance of all human beings.
If parents have an objection to treating homosexual couples as equals, and this objection is based in their "Judeo-Christian belief" as stated in the video, then perhaps those parents should look at private, religion-based education. I fully support any parent who chooses to educate their child in this manner, even if I don't fully support the tenets of that religion. They are exercising their right as parents to do what is best for their children.
All human beings, homosexual and heterosexual alike, have the right to be treated as equal human beings in all respects.
Lucy, you are a brave woman. I think this is a very important issue and one that we need to be aware of. I personally agree with Prop 8. Marriage is for bringing children into the world not for personal gratification.
I don't love scare tactic politicking. Here's a link discussing this video with a few more facts (and plenty of opinion for sure). I'm not advocating either the video or the article views but I think when we start using scare tactics to get people to vote a certain way we lose the integrity of our opinion and are less likely to reach people. It's like when we teach the gospel- without the Spirit there, no matter how much it makes sense there cannot be a conversion. http://www.feministmormonhousewives.org/?p=2067#more-2067
WOW! That is scary stuff...I can't believe they put him in jail. Thank you for the video, you are to be commended for putting truth above popularity.
You have comment moderation enabled, so I'll be very interested to see if you even post my comment.
Everyone has a right to their religion and to their opinion, and to have their own beliefs and to teach them to their children.
But everyone also has a right to live in a world without HATE. To feel safe no matter what their sexual orientation, or that of their family members.
This is about civil rights.
This clip is nothing more than propaganda. Same sex marriage is not going to affect how children are taught in schools.
Schools across America today, no matter what state, are ALREADY teaching children that there are people who may seem different than themselves or their families. Schools teach children that "bullying because someone is gay or lesbian or transgendered or their parents are is WRONG" and the schools that do teach that should be commended.
We don't need another child's life ruined because they didn't understand that it's ok to be different. Look at Brandon McInerney, the 14 year old child who killed his 15 year old classmate Lawrence King. Lawrence is dead because he was "different". Brandon's life is forever changed, he killed another human being. If their school at the very least taught "tolerance" of GLBT people, maybe Lawrence King would be alive today.
Schools in California or any other state for that matter, aren't going to be indoctrinating children into the "gay lifestyle".
We're not the Navy, we don't need to "recruit".
We just want to be equal.
thank you for posting this video, it is certainly eye opening to see how else it will effect everyone. I cannot believe they jailed that man to protect his right as a parent! I admire your boldness in posting this video despite others' opinions.
Good Job Lucy!
I live in California and I voted no on 8. I believe the family has been hurt more by divorce and babies born without their parents being married....and people living together. Let gays marry....they seem to have lasting unions. Just my opinion. Oh...I voted for Obama too. I voted early by mail.
Thank you for posting this video, It really is an eye opener, I admire that you are not worried about popularity, and are willing to express you opinion. I don't understand why liberals are so hyped to cram their ideas down our throats. Conservitives and Christians are critized constantly for supposely trying to push our beliefs on the world, but they don't see that they are doing this constantly.
The election of conservative judges is so important, it seems that some liberal judges are not interpreting the law as written, but changing the laws to fit their ideas of how things should be.
Well, I didn't think I will a popularity contest for posting this. I find it interesting that those posting bad things about my post don't allow you to link back to them and see who they are and what they are about.
I don't agree with hate behavior. I don't agree with homosexuality but believe that that is their business not mine. I have enough problems of my own and don't need to point fingers. That isn't what prop 8 is about though. It is about what gay marriage laws do to stregth of straight marriages and what it does to the family. The family is central to our Heavenly Father's plan for us hear on earth. I can only see these laws as a direct attack on that.
I find it interesting that those shouting for equality aren't really asking for just that. They are not happy with tollerance. They want us to agree with and condone their actions and to teach them to our children.
I won't be popular for this comment either, but I figured if my big brother and put himself on the line for this so can I in my small way. How many people actually read this blog anyway. I am just one Mama byrd.
Wow. You think "bad things" are being posted here just because people don't agree with you? No one's view (at least, any that you are allowing to be posted) have said "bad things" - they just don't agree with you. Guess you aren't open to listening, are you? I'm going to repeat what I posted yesterday, and I guess you chose not to include. Our school system doesn't really teach about any type of marriage - heterosexual or otherwise. And as I also said yesterday, WWJD? Accept and love everyone, or try to be divisive? And finally, I am completely confident in MY parenting skills that I know that my children will have the values that I hope for them. I'm sorry you're not as sure about your ability as a parent.
Your comment wasn't posted here yesterday because you never left one here. Again I find it interesting that those that are posting "diferent" views don't leave their info here just comments. I at least had the guts to put my name on it.
WWJD? Interesting I didn't know he supported homosexuality. Nore does he support Hate Crimes. I expressed my opinion with this blog post, I guess you also have a problem with people that have different views than you. Do I have a problem with gays living together? No Do I have a problem when there is legislation passed that allowes them to be together? No Do I have problems when legislature is passed that compromises the integrity of hetro marriage and the family? yes.
If these parents disagreed with what was being taught in school then it is the perfect opportunity to talk with their children about their personal beliefs. If these parents had problems with the things being taught in their sons school they should have taken it up with the school board rather than harrasing their schools administrator. People are not gay because they chose to have a life where they are discriminated against but because that is their natural biology.
It is intresting that those who disagree with the parents on the video sound so angry, the thing is most "liberals" preach acceptance of all people and lifestyles, and opinions, except the opinions, values of Judeo-
christian beliefs. Praise God that we "christians" have faith and firm belief in Him, History shows that persercution of Christians only makes us stronger
Don't think that christians are going to sit back and just let these things happen to our country w/o a fight, WWJD, He got angry when his father's house was defiled, the body of Christ, the church is his house, we are the Body, we will speak up for our children.
God Bless every one reading this, I would ask that you search yours hearts. Give Our Lord an invitation into your Heart
Ellena
God created Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve. Our bodies were designed the way they are to create life, that is something that two men or women cannot do. That is a fact.
I can't get the vid to work properly. What is Prop 8?
Good for you Mama Byrd. More people should be willing to stand up for what they believe. Why should we be silent about our views, no one else seems to be.
I added some more info about prop 8 to the blog post above. It isn't about live and let live. It is about defending our definition of marriage and family and our right to believe as we choose.
This issue doesn't condone violence toward gays and shouldn't even be an issue. It is about our definition of marriage.
We are to love each other, but do not have to love their actions. Americans need to keep marriage defined as a man and woman. Period. Anything else is not a "marriage" - it can be a committed relationship or civil union or whatever.
The changes sweeping over this country make me so sad. Thanks for posting, Lucy.
Congrats on being gutsy. I appreciate it.
I have your blog on rss feed because I enjoy your sewing, quilting and crafts. I do not care for political content though, I will be keeping away from your blog til your election time is over. See you in December, maybe. (Im Canadian and not much interested in American politics so I hope you understand)
